Collagen 101

1Why is 5g enough when other brands use more?

Many brands rely on 10g+ servings padded with fillers to look more impressive on the label. Ours works differently: our peptides are so bioavailable they've been clinically studied from just 2.5g.

We include a full 5g per serving — double the clinically studied amount — so you get real results without the unnecessary bulk or fillers. More powder isn't more benefit; better-absorbed collagen is.

2Is it really true our body stops producing collagen at 25?

Not exactly — it's one of those half-true internet facts. Your body doesn't switch collagen off at 25; it simply starts making a little less, declining roughly 1% a year from your mid-twenties onward. That gradual loss is a big part of what drives thinner skin, fine lines, dark circles and other visible signs of aging. The idea behind a daily dose is just to top up what naturally slows, so your skin, hair and nails keep their bounce.

3Marine vs bovine — what's the difference?

Marine collagen is hydrolyzed peptides from wild-caught cod — lighter and lower molecular weight, so it absorbs fast and tastes exceptionally clean. It's the base of our signature milks, fully traceable from source to batch and rigorously third-party tested for zero heavy metals or fillers.

Bovine collagen is Types I & III from grass-fed cattle in Brazil — just as effective, with a slightly richer body. It's premium grade, fully traceable and free from growth hormones, antibiotics, BSE, TSE, ethylene oxide, irradiation, nitrosamines, and melamine — and, like everything we make, manufactured with love in Los Angeles, USA.

Both rebuild the same skin, hair and nail proteins — the choice comes down to taste and dietary preference. Each flavor lists its exact source right on the pack.

4What does “hydrolyzed” mean — and why does it matter?

Hydrolyzed means the collagen has been broken down into tiny peptides — small enough to actually absorb into your bloodstream and get put to work. Whole collagen is too big; your body can't use it efficiently.

Ours are patented, low-molecular-weight peptides studied specifically for absorption, which is a big part of why it works and why it tastes clean instead of fishy.

5Can vegans take collagen?

True collagen only comes from animals, so a genuinely vegan collagen doesn't exist — anything sold that way is really an amino-acid blend that supports your own collagen production rather than being collagen itself.

The key player there is glycine — the amino acid that makes up roughly a third of collagen and gives your body the raw material to build its own. Glycine is also loved for supporting restful sleep, calm, and a clearer-looking complexion. Our Amino Milk is a glycine-fortified blend made for exactly that (it's vegetarian — it does contain milk, so not strictly vegan). And if you eat fish, our wild-caught marine milks are the cleanest-tasting way in.

6Does collagen actually work?

Yes — when it's the right kind. Only hydrolyzed collagen peptides, like ours, are broken down small enough for your body to absorb and use. In clinical research, our marine-collagen matrix boosted skin hydration by +28% in 30 days, with continued studies showing improvements in elasticity over time.

It isn't instant like a facial — it's a daily habit that compounds. Consistency is the whole game.

7What is collagen, exactly?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body — the scaffolding that keeps skin firm and bouncy, hair and nails strong, and joints cushioned. Your body makes plenty of it in your twenties, then production drops roughly 1% a year after 25. A daily dose helps replace what time quietly takes away.

8What kind of collagen do you use?

We make it in three forms, so you can pick what fits your body and diet:

  • Marine — wild-caught fish, the lightest and fastest-absorbing, with the cleanest taste. The base of our signature milks.
  • Bovine — grass-fed cattle, rich and effective and a little more budget-friendly.
  • Glycine-fortified (Amino Milk) — our milk blend boosted with extra glycine, the amino acid your body uses to make its own collagen, for clearer skin and better sleep.

Every one is hydrolyzed into tiny peptides for absorption — the same skin, hair and nail building blocks, just sourced the way you prefer.

9What makes Crushed Tonic different?

Most collagen fails for one reason: it tastes like the sea. Ours doesn't. We use patented, low-molecular-weight peptides with roughly double the absorption of ordinary collagen, clinically proven to boost skin hydration by +28% in 30 days, and third-party tested for zero metals, toxins and fillers.

It's the result of seven years of Korean lab development — now stocked everywhere from Sephora and Nordstrom to Anthropologie and Erewhon — blended into nostalgic Korean-café flavors that make your daily glow ritual something you actually look forward to. This is ingestible skincare, not a chalky scoop you dread.

Benefits & results

1Can it help with joints?

Collagen is a major component of the connective tissue that cushions your joints, so many people use it for everyday comfort and mobility. Joint benefits tend to show up later than skin ones — think the 4–6 month mark with daily use.

2Can it help with wrinkles and fine lines?

Yes. By supporting the deeper dermal layer, collagen builds density and hydration, so lines look softer and skin looks plumper. Think of it as skincare that starts beneath the surface, working alongside your topicals rather than instead of them.

3Can it help with dark circles?

It can — it depends on the cause. A lot of under-eye darkness comes from thin, delicate skin that lets the vessels beneath show through. Collagen supports the density and firmness of that skin, so with consistent daily use many people find the area looks smoother and less shadowed over time. It won't change circles that come from pigment, genetics or a rough night's sleep — but for the thinning kind, it works from the inside out.

4Can it help with acne?

Collagen isn't an acne treatment — it won't clear an active breakout, and we'd never promise that. What it can do is support your skin barrier and its natural repair process, which many people find helps post-breakout marks and texture fade a little faster and keeps skin looking calmer and more even. Think support for healing and resilience, not a spot treatment.

5Can it help with cellulite?

There's real research here: bioavailable collagen peptides have been clinically studied for improving the appearance of cellulite by strengthening the skin's dermal structure and the connective tissue around it. It isn't an overnight fix and it won't erase it entirely, but with daily use over a few months many people notice smoother-looking skin. As always, consistency is what makes the difference.

6Does it help with gut health?

It can. Collagen contains glycine and glutamine, amino acids that support your intestinal lining. Many people notice they feel less bloated and more comfortable after consistent daily use.

7Does it really help with hair?

It supports it. Collagen supplies the amino acids your body uses to build keratin — the main protein in hair. With consistent use, many people report stronger, shinier strands and less shedding over time. Our Keratin Booster is built for exactly this.

8How long until I see results?

Most people notice smoother skin and stronger nails around 6–8 weeks, fuller-feeling hair by 3 months, and better joint comfort around 4–6 months. Collagen works from the inside out — patience pays off, and daily use is what gets you there.

9What are the actual benefits?

Daily collagen supports your whole "structure" from the inside out. Most people are after:

  • Skin — hydration and bounce; clinically +28% hydration in 30 days
  • Hair — stronger, shinier strands and less shedding over time
  • Nails — harder, less brittle, fewer breaks
  • Joints — cushioning and everyday comfort
  • Gut — glycine and glutamine to support your gut lining

It's a compounding habit — the benefits build the longer you're consistent.

10What happens if I stop?

Nothing harmful — but you'll gradually lose the glow, bounce and comfort you've built. Your body naturally makes less collagen every year after 25, so a daily habit is really about staying ahead of that curve rather than catching up later.

11Will it help my nails?

Nails are one of the first places people notice a difference. Because collagen provides the building blocks for the keratin in your nails, consistent daily use tends to mean harder, less brittle nails and fewer breaks — usually within a couple of months.

Ingredients & formula

1Are there any fillers or artificial ingredients?

In our collagen, none. No fillers, no artificial sweeteners, no artificial colors — just hydrolyzed peptides, real flavor and a touch of allulose, third-party tested for zero metals and toxins. Every gram is doing something for your skin, hair or body.

2Does it contain biotin or probiotics?

No. We've kept the formula focused on what's clinically studied — our patented collagen peptides — rather than padding the label. Crushed Tonic no longer contains biotin or probiotics; it's a deliberately clean, short ingredient list.

3How do you sweeten it? Is there sugar?

Our collagen is never sweetened artificially — every flavor lands somewhere between 0 and 3g of sugar, done three ways so you can pick your level:

The one exception is our hydration electrolytes (Grapefruit Glow), which use just a trace of sucralose. Exact grams for every flavor are on its nutrition panel.

Zero sugar (0g) · purist flavors
Just collagen and real flavor, no sweetener at all: Matcha, Coffee, Hojicha, Lucuma, Turmeric, Unflavored.

Allulose-sweetened (0g sugar) · creamy milks, made sugar-free
Sweet and creamy using allulose — a rare sugar that tastes like sugar but is virtually zero-glycemic: Banana Milk (Sugar-Free), Vanilla Bean (Sugar-Free), Banana Milk Matcha, Banana Milk Coffee.

Lightly sweetened (about 3g sugar) · the originals
A whisper of real sugar for that nostalgic café taste: Banana Milk, Strawberry Milk, Chocolate Milk, Rose, Honeydew, Vanilla Bean, Caramel — and the rest of our milks.

4How much protein — and how many calories?

Each serving is about 5 g of protein and ranges from 0 to 40 calories depending on the flavor — the zero-sugar purist flavors sit near 0–20, the creamy milks up to about 40. No added fat, and little to no sugar. Exact numbers are on each flavor's nutrition panel.

5Is it keto, paleo, gluten-free or dairy-free?

Collagen is naturally gluten-free and works for keto and paleo — protein with virtually no carbs and a zero-glycemic sweetener. Plenty of flavors are fully dairy-free too (all our purist flavors, Chocolate Milk, Watermelon Juice, the electrolytes and broth); the creamy milks are the ones with dairy. One gluten note: our Umami Broth carries a trace from soy sauce. You'll find the full breakdown in the "What about allergens?" answer.

6What about allergens?

We label every flavor clearly. Here's the overview:

  • Fish — our marine flavors are made with fish-derived collagen (wild-caught cod and veterinary-inspected tilapia). Our bovine flavors use grass-fed collagen and contain no fish.
  • Dairy-free — Matcha, Coffee, Hojicha, Lucuma, Turmeric, Unflavored, Chocolate Milk, Watermelon Juice, our hydration electrolytes and Umami Broth. If a flavor isn't on this list, assume it contains dairy — that's our creamy milk lineup.
  • Soy & gluten — our Umami Korean Broth is made with soy sauce, which adds a trace of soy and gluten.

Our collagen itself is always free from artificial sweeteners, colors and fillers — sweetened with just a little real sugar or allulose, depending on the flavor. Our hydration electrolytes and collagen jelly are formulated differently and can include erythritol, stevia, or — in the electrolytes — a trace of sucralose.

If you have a specific allergy, check the full ingredient list on your flavor's page — each one is labeled — and reach out anytime and we'll confirm.

7What's actually in it?

Short, clean ingredient lists — that's the point. Every stick is built on:

  • 5g hydrolyzed collagen peptides — wild-caught marine or grass-fed bovine, depending on the flavor. Roughly double the absorption of ordinary collagen, and no artificial sweeteners, colors or fillers.

Safety & testing

1What age should I start taking collagen?

There's no single "right" age — but your body's own collagen starts to taper in your mid-twenties, so around 25 is a natural time to begin. There's no upper limit either: it's just as valuable in your 40s, 50s and beyond, whether you're starting fresh or staying ahead of the curve. For anyone under 18, we'd check with a parent or doctor first, since young bodies usually make plenty on their own.

2Are you third-party tested and certified?

Yes — on both counts. Every batch is tested by an independent third-party lab for purity and heavy metals, and we're NSF Certified and UNFI approved — the same standards that let us sit on shelves at the most trusted retailers in the country.

Transparency is the standard, not a favor: if you'd like the Certificate of Analysis for the batch you have, email us the lot code on your pack and we'll send it right over.

3Can I take it pregnant or breastfeeding?

Always check with your doctor first — but here's the encouraging part: collagen is a pure, clean protein with nothing artificial, and protein needs rise sharply during pregnancy (commonly cited guidance is roughly 25g more per day). Many moms-to-be use it as a gentle, easy way to get more.

It's especially loved postpartum, when it can help with the hair shedding and skin recovery so many new moms go through. Your provider always knows your situation best.

4Do you test for heavy metals?

Yes — this is non-negotiable for us. Every production run is third-party lab tested and verified for zero metals, toxins and fillers. Purity is the whole point of ingestible skincare; if it goes in your body, it has to be clean.

5Is it FDA approved?

No collagen product on the market is "FDA approved" — that isn't a category the FDA approves. What matters is what's in the tub: ours is made in the USA and third-party tested for purity and heavy metals on every batch.

As required, our statements haven't been evaluated by the FDA and aren't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

6Is it safe? Any side effects?

Collagen is a natural protein your body already makes, so it's very well tolerated. A small number of people feel mild fullness at first, which usually passes quickly. Every batch is third-party tested for purity and heavy-metal safety.

7Is your marine collagen sustainable?

Our marine collagen is wild-caught and responsibly sourced. We care about where our ingredients come from as much as what they do — clean sourcing and clean testing are two sides of the same standard.

8Where is your collagen sourced from?

Every flavor is made from one source or the other — wild-caught marine or grass-fed bovine, never a mystery blend.

Our marine collagen is hydrolyzed collagen peptides derived from wild-caught cod, fully traceable from source to batch and rigorously third-party tested for zero heavy metals or fillers.

Our bovine collagen is ethically and sustainably sourced from grass-fed cattle in Brazil — premium grade, fully traceable, and rigorously tested. It's free from growth hormones, antibiotics, BSE, TSE, ethylene oxide, irradiation, nitrosamines, and melamine, and manufactured with love in Los Angeles, USA.

The source for your flavor is printed right on the pack.

How to use

1Can I mix it with coffee, tea or matcha?

Yes — heat doesn't destroy collagen. Blend it into hot or iced drinks, smoothies, even bakes. For the silkiest result, make a quick concentrate first: whisk your stick into 2 tbsp of water until smooth, then top with 120 ml of milk. Pairs beautifully with matcha, coffee and chocolate milk.

2Can I take it with my other vitamins?

Absolutely. Collagen pairs especially well with vitamin C (which helps your body use it) and with hydrators like hyaluronic acid or ceramides. There's no known interference with everyday vitamins — stack away.

3Can I take more than one a day?

You can — but one stick is really all you need. Our 5g is already double the clinically studied dose, so a second won't do more for your skin; the only reasons to reach for another are the taste or an extra protein boost. More collagen isn't more benefit — daily consistency is what does the work.

4How do I make it taste best?

Treat it like a little café moment: choose your dose, whisk it into 2 tbsp of water to make a smooth concentrate, then finish with 120 ml of cold or steamed milk. Our favorite pairings: Vanilla Bean + coffee, Banana Milk + matcha, Banana Milk + chocolate milk, and Strawberry Milk + matcha. More ideas live on our recipes page.

5How much do I scoop for each flavor?

One scoop is one daily serving — about 5g of collagen, the clinically studied dose. Because flavor and milk powder add weight, the scoop differs by line:

Want it stronger? Reach for a more intense flavor or a little less liquid — no need to add more powder. One serving already delivers the full 5g, which is all your skin can put to use.

2 tsp (about 7g) · zero-sugar purist flavors
Matcha, Coffee, Hojicha, Lucuma, Turmeric, Unflavored.

1 tbsp · all our sweetened milks
Banana Milk (Sugar-Free), Vanilla Bean (Sugar-Free), Banana Milk Matcha, Banana Milk Coffee, Banana Milk, Strawberry Milk, Chocolate Milk, Rose, Honeydew, Vanilla Bean, Caramel — and the rest.

6What's the correct serving?

One stick a day does it — 5g of highly bioavailable collagen, double the clinically studied dose. There's no need to go beyond that; consistency matters far more than mega-dosing, so the magic is really taking it every single day.

Serving Size: 12.5 g (about 3 tsp)
Servings Per Container: 30
Directions: Mix 1 serving (12.5 g / about 3 tsp) into water, milk, or coffee.

7When's the best time to take it?

Whenever you'll actually remember — morning coffee, a post-workout shake, or bedtime tea. Collagen isn't time-sensitive; daily consistency beats perfect timing every time.
